Hobby Update: Painting

26 Apr

Actually playing games and wanting to get those armies painted has cut into my plans to paint everything released this year, but with a Necron wave coming in a few weeks I need to push on. Those Space Wolves are nearly done, they just need a final push and then the Hivelord is probably only a few hours off finishing too now that I’ve done the boring part. That’s a lot of plastic to paint with boring flat colours, at least the highlights will be a bit more fun. One thing is certain, I really don’t like painting Space Wolf armour.

I did buy some of the new paints. Then I grabbed some more. Then I grabbed some more. I have all the bases now and pretty fine they are too. The textured paint would be pointless, but I’ve used it a couple of times already to touch bases up so I’m even liking that. I can’t get to grips with the drybrushing paints though, they really don’t give an effect I like, but then again I’m not the worlds largest drybrushing fan anyway.

The big shock is the new how to paint book and DVD being actually good. Lots of really good advice and a nice format for the step by step guides. The most important tip is to water down your paints, but we all knew that already. Some of those new GW paints really are a big gloopier than they need to be.

With it looking like the next batch of releases are mainly Necrons and finecast re-releases that I can ignore May sounds like an easy month for painting. Which is handy as the Tervigon is still bare plastic…

A cool note about the new paints

02 Apr

Games Workshop have a pretty cool thing going on with the new paints. If you head over to the Citadel Painting Guides they list the colours that you could use for a bunch of models.  They really aren’t complicated as they just look like this:

OK, marginally useful as a guide, but notuce the “Add these paints to cart” button. That’s quite handy.

I may have just ordered some paints. What? I’m weak. Get over it. Who can turn down a white that actually covers?

Paint It All Week 5

01 Apr

This is more like it. I’ve made progress!

New Releases

None! Yay! Well technically five marines in a paint set have a slightly different sculpt so I probably have to count them.

Tyranids

  • Hive Tyrant (Plastic, 1 model)
  • Tyranid Tyrannofex/Tervigon (Plastic, 1 model)

Space Wolves

  • Thunderwolf Cavalry (Plastic, 3 models)
  • Fenrisian Wolf Pack (Plastic, 5 models)
  • Arjac Rockfist, the Anvil of Fenris (Finecast, 1 model)
  • Wolf Lord on Thunderwolf (Finecast, 1 model)
  • Grey Hunder with Wolf Standard (Finecast, 1 model)
  • Cyberwolf (Finecast, 1 model)

Red text means I’ve not started yet, purple means assembled, blue means I’m painting and Green means I’m finished. 6 out of 14 models painted.

The horrible Cyberwolf is painted and now sits on a shelf waiting for that damn weak leg to spontaneously snap.

The Hive Tyrant has had a bit more paint applied, but I’m getting bored of just getting the basecoat done. As soon as that’s finished it’ll become a lot more fun.

The Thunderwolf Cavalry is progressing well. Boy are those big doggies! The fur just seems to eat up the paint and you need about twice what you think you will need.

40K Releases for April 2012 (or lack of them)

31 Mar

Yay! Easy month (considering I haven’t finished painting last months yet…) No models, some transfers (Mentor Legion? Eh? I’ve covered those guys before and thought they had been forgotten…) and the new paints. Oh look, there is a new Marine paint set that has the usual 5 models. But what’s this? Molded shoulder pads on them? For Dark Angels? If they aren’t the models from the new starter set then I will eat my White Dwarf collection.

Technically I probably have to paint them, don’t I? I don’t have any of the colours in the box of course so my usual reason for not buying them doesn’t stand… I don’t really need those paints though as I use Vallejo usually. If it turns up in my local store I’ll grab one.

Paint It All Week 4

26 Mar

A month into the project and it’s all looking quite good. The Hive Tyrant comes along in leaps and bounds and I’m starting to get itchy about getting to work on the Space Wolves so I’ve started on them to take my mind off the vast amounts of black and bleached bone that my ‘nids need.

I made a decision about basing the Cyberwolf and added a chunk of rock (conveniently sized bit found in a GW basing kit) to support one of the other legs. I did this as I was painting as I was getting so worried about the wobbling on one fragile cyberleg just from slapping the base brown coat on. It was even worrying me as I airbrushed the model black to start with. Having a solid support for another leg (the curled front leg brushing against it) should mean that it could actually survive being put in a nice padded foam case, let alone a game or twenty.

Lastly I got some more basing supplies in so the wolf riders got some texture on their bases and then a quick undercoat with the airbrush. I’m painting the riders separately which really is the only way that makes sense with those models.

No pictures this week as nothing is finished. This means I really have to finish some for next week, hopefully at least all but one of the rest of the wolves.

Still no word of new releases for April as it is indeed looking like a fantasy month. It looks like I’m in good shape schedule wise.

New Paints

24 Mar

As another example of how well Games Workshop’s release secrecy policy is working (i.e. not at all) the paints we’ve known about for months have finally been announced. 145 new pots of joy with totally different names. Well that’s not going to be annoying for a while, is it?

My first though is that it’s a good thing as it really makes it easier for people to paint without mixing. I use a wet palette and Vallejo dropper bottles so mixing colours is just as easy as not for me, but for most people I expect that’s far too much effort so more colours can only be a good thing. I’m a little dubious about some of the new range like the drybrush paints, which I will certainly try, and the textured paint as that doesn’t really seem to save much time. Or maybe it does, I’ll give it a shot as well. The expanded (ex)foundation range is nice as those are really nice paints already so more colours are always welcome. I foundation replacement for Bleached Bone would have been nice as it’s the colour I’m currently using lots on the two big ‘nid beasties that were just released and it’s a bit of a pain to use. Even so I’ll have to see if the new formula is better than the existing one, and if so grab a bottle.

The mega paint set is now £333, which is more than a little eye watering. Still, that’s £2.29 per pot with a free army case so it’s not too bad since they are £2.30 on their own. I’ll be passing on that offer as I don’t think I need all the paints, but I will pick up a selection.

It’s great to see such a large range, I wish the pots had changed but it’s a good day for painting as a hobby.

Paint it all Week 3

19 Mar

It’s week 3 and there’s still no new releases so it’s time to start cracking open the next set of boxes and get to smelling that glue.

Tyranids

  • Hive Tyrant (Plastic, 1 model)
  • Tyranid Tyrannofex/Tervigon (Plastic, 1 model)

Space Wolves

  • Thunderwolf Cavalry (Plastic, 3 models)
  • Fenrisian Wolf Pack (Plastic, 5 models)
  • Arjac Rockfist, the Anvil of Fenris (Finecast, 1 model)
  • Wolf Lord on Thunderwolf (Finecast, 1 model)
  • Grey Hunder with Wolf Standard (Finecast, 1 model)
  • Cyberwolf (Finecast, 1 model)

Red text means I’ve not started yet, purple means assembled, blue means I’m painting and Green means I’m finished. 5 out of 14 models painted.

I assembled the Hive Tyrant as a winged clawing monster and I have to say that the model looks rather awesome. I have no doubt that in the first game I use him he will attract all the fire on the table, the wings just make him so large and overbearing. Shiny Model Syndrome at its finest. I’ve started painting him, but he’s a big model so it’ll take a while so hopefully I’ll get him finished for next weekend and I can move onto painting Space Wolf armour.

I’m less impressed with the Thunderwolf Cavalry as I’m not 100% that I’m putting the Storm Shields on right. Still, my first Marine had an epic pose so I’m happy with that.

The Wolf Guard with Standard is a reasonably nice model, but with some of the usual finecast issues. The axe is very bent and there’s a couple of bubbles on the top of the backpack that I might need to put some real effort into filling. He also looks like he has a dog skin on the standard as it doesn’t look very wolf like. I’ve decided that it’s his childhood pet dog and he keeps him around for luck. Not the dog’s luck of course as he’s dead.

The real disappointment (which I knew going in) was the cyberwolf. It feels VERY fragile and is supported on a cybernetic leg that I just know is going to snap. There was also some nasty flash on a very fine wire loop on the leg that was a pain to clean up without destroying it, I expect a lot of models will just not have that bit when they hit the tabletop. The most obvious issue though is of course the price. Why can’t the fenrisian wolves plastic set have had a cyber leg or two as alternatives? Why does this have to be finecast? Still, the model is nicely detailed and the way the front cyber-leg slots in is very satisfying. I was glad to see as well that some bubble like things on the fur were infact meant to be there and are embedded cybernetics.

Lastly is a really nice Terminator pose and yet another wolf with rider. Both really nice models of course, should be interesting to paint them. To be honest I’ll be glad to see the end of painting wolves soon!

Speaking of which I’ll have to get around to hitting all these models with the airbrush one evening. Two weeks until the next White Dwarf I think, although it should hopefully be a very light 40k month as the rumour is new paints instead of models. Then again when was the last time a rumour was actually 100% true…

EDIT: Of course the moment I post this GW release a teaser trailer for what looks like the new paints and says it’s coming on the 21st… The puts is squarely into this month and leaves April open. Please be fantasy…

Paint it All Week 2

11 Mar

The annoying thing about this week is that stuff was actually released so some real painting is needed. Figuring I have two months to do these here is the current list:

Tyranids

  • Hive Tyrant (Plastic, 1 model)
  • Tyranid Tyrannofex/Tervigon (Plastic, 1 model)

Space Wolves

  • Thunderwolf Cavalry (Plastic, 3 models)
  • Fenrisian Wolf Pack (Plastic, 5 models)
  • Arjac Rockfist, the Anvil of Fenris (Finecast, 1 model)
  • Wolf Lord on Thunderwolf (Finecast, 1 model)
  • Grey Hunder with Wolf Standard (Finecast, 1 model)
  • Cyberwolf (Finecast, 1 model)
Red text means I’ve not started yet, purple means assembled, blue means I’m painting and Green means I’m finished. 5 out of 14 models painted.
I have to say that I’m liking the new wolf models. I know some people haven’t but since they are actually wolf-like creatures from another planet I’m not too hung up on that. The Fenrisian wolf pack is incredibly easy to paint and that detail just loves washes and drybrushing.
A pretty slow week due to stuff not arriving, but I did manage to get a Fenrisian Wolf Pack box painted and based. Amazingly it means I’ve finished the first squad of the year, so Im off to a good start at 35% of the models painted already although that’s sort of an unhelpful number due to the fact that those Tyranid models are big.
I will of course post pictures of what I’ve painted. One thing’s for sure, I’m still very rusty at painting.

Hopefully the next set of models will arrive tomorrow and I can get stuck in with the Thunderwolf Calvary and deciding if I’m going to make a Tyrannofex or Tervigon

Paint it all – Week One

04 Mar

Week one of painting everything and although there have been no proper releases yet this year there was the rather fantastic 25th anniversary model of the Imperial Fists Space Marine holding an Ork head from the cover of the original rulebook so I’m working on that.

Now this is a FineCast model so I was a bit worried about the quality, but it turns out I needn’t have worried as it’s perfect. No casting lines, no bubbles and no miscast parts. It comes with two bases, a large one for the scenic option and a normal one if I want to use it in an army. I’m going for scenic as it looks better, but I guess I could magnetise it if I want. Actually that’s not a bad idea.

So only one thing to paint this week and so that’s pretty easy. Next comes the ‘nids and Space Wolves so I’ve also been thinking about ‘nid paint schemes on some space models. I’m no closer to picking one yet, but I don’t have to worry about that for a few days.

I did work on a model that is nearly finished, one of the plastic fantasy single models they released last year. I really love the single pose plastics they have been experimenting with, hopefully it’s a sign that they intend to go further down that route and less so with FineCast.

I think I need to work on my photography. And painting. Really nice model though despite it really calling for more than just the rough drybrushing I have it.

My second crazy 40k 25th anniversary idea: Paint them all

26 Feb

I had a mad idea for the 20th anniversary of 40k that I would blog every White Dwarf. That obviously didn’t happen as I lost interest in the game again as things happened in my life, but for the 25th I’m doing it and although it’s mainly for my own amusement I hope it can tell us something interesting about the state of White Dwarf over the years. I had another idea last year that was also a bit mad, and so I’m going to give that a go as well.

I’m going to paint everything new (ish) that Games Workshop releases for 40k this year. I would have mentioned it a few months back but they kind of forgot to release anything so far this year. Well all that is changing with some second wave releases for ‘Nids and Space Wolves and so I can get stuck in. It will of course cover the move to 6th edition so there will be a brand new starter box as well to get my teeth into later in the year.

So what am I painting? All new non-limited edition 40k releases from Games Workshop. This doesn’t include Forgeworld or anything insanely expensive like that, and limited edition models such as the games day and subscriber models are excluded as well. I’m excluding Battleforces as well as they are just collections of existing models but they may be convenient ways to cut the costs. I’m also ignoring models that have been re-released as Finecast when they were previously metal as they’re not new models. Any metal/finecast models that go plastic are fair game though as they will add something new to the model.

It’s good to see that GW are pushing the boat out well with the first proper releases of the year because who doesn’t like big Tyranids and Marines on Wolfback? After two light months March looks like a bit of a nightmare as I’ll have to paint:

  • Tyranid Hive Tyrant/Swarm Lord, which is now in plastic. Who thinks I can resist those massive wings?
  • Tyrannofex/Tervigon.
  • Space Wolves Thunderwolf Cavalry
  • Space Wolves Fenrisian Wolf Pack
  • Arjac Rockfist, The Anvil of Fenris
  • Wolf Lord on Thunderwolf
  • Space Wolves Grey Hunter with Wolf Standard
  • Space Wolves Cyberwolf
Luckily for my bank balance and sanity the rest of the new releases are old models going to Finecast or weapon packs. In other news GW are doing weapon packs.

To be honest all this seemed a lot saner before this set of advance orders went up… Still, it’s not too bad as long as April is a Fantasy month. They’re surely due a new army release aren’t they? Please?

In the meantime I’ll sit here and watch the door for my 25th anniversary 40K marine to turn up. It’s not part of all of this but how could I resist with all of what I’ve been doing?
